Venue

The 2027 Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries (DHNB) Conference will take place at Umeå University, Sweden, from 1–5 March 2027. Pre-conference activities are taking place 1-2 March.

When Umeå University opened its doors in 1965, the public value of the humanities was still being debated. Some believed the new university should focus solely on subjects that they thought served societal development. But advocates for the humanities saw something more: a need to understand people, culture, language, and history in northern Sweden. Their vision became reality. In 1968, the Faculty of Humanities was established, and as it flourished, Umeå became home to Sweden’s first Humanities Building that was designed to bring all humanities disciplines under the same roof. This building will be the main venue for the conference, but it is only one expression of Umeå’s rich humanities environment. Here in the north, culture and the humanities are alive, diverse, and deeply embedded in society.

Eat and drink in the Umeå region

Umeå is a fantastic food town. Most of the restaurants, regardless of focus, use produce from our part of the country – reindeer and moose, char, whitefish and whitefish roe, deer, lingonberry and arctic raspberries. Västerbottensost (cheese) Vindelnrökt (smoked pork and ham) and Brännlands Iscider (cider) are just some examples of popular trade marks from our area.
